Located at the corner of West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue, in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, the West Side Market is a historic landmark that dates back to 1840. In 1912 it was converted to an indoor and outdoor market space with a huge yellow brick markethouse that includes an interior market hall, an arcade and a large 137-foot-tall clock tower.
The West Side Market features a vast array of vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products, meats and seafood. These stalls are all run by local vendors who pride themselves in offering the best possible quality of their products and service to their customers.
Visitors can find a wide variety of ethnic foods at the market from all over the world. You will find everything from Chilean sea bass to homemade Lithuanian sausage, European cheeses and freshly baked bread. You will also be able to sample a wide range of sweets and candy.
With regular hours five days a week, the West Side Market provides a unique shopping experience for local residents as well as tourists. Many of these customers come for a day of shopping and eating while others visit on a weekend.
The market is a must see for all who visit Cleveland. It has been featured on the Travel Channel and Food Network, and attracts more than 1 million visitors per year.
Aside from being a great place to shop, the West Side Market is an interesting cultural site that is a must for anyone visiting Cleveland. It is a historic landmark that is the pride of the Ohio City community and the entire city of Cleveland.
Today, less than one-third of the original stalls remain in operation at the West Side Market. As a result, the City has hired a consultant to conduct a study on how to revitalize the Market as well as to transition operations to a nonprofit operator.
As a result of the study, it is expected that new ownership will be established in the near future. With a new leadership team, the City of Cleveland will take steps to ensure that the Market continues to thrive for the residents and visitors who call it home.
In the meantime, a number of issues are being addressed such as improving vendor access to the facility and ensuring that a healthy, vibrant and successful business culture is established at the West Side Market. The City of Cleveland is working with vendors and the community to create a master plan for the long-term sustainability of the Market while transitioning operations to a non-profit organization.
With a variety of unique and interesting foods from all over the world, the West Side Market is a must for visitors who want to experience Cleveland’s rich culinary history. The West Side Market is also a great way to enjoy some of the area’s best people watching! Learn more information about The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
